How Spencer Started

How Spencer Started

Spencer Shea bused tables in this very space on South Virginia Street before opening Homegrown. A stint in pre-med and pediatrics convinced him the most direct path to preventative health ran straight through the kitchen.
Food as Medicine

Food as Medicine

The conviction behind Homegrown isn't abstract — it came from watching his daughter struggle with alopecia and eczema, and seeing clean organic food make a difference when nothing else had. Every dish since has been made from scratch, every ingredient sourced with intention.
From Truck to Table

From Truck to Table

Homegrown launched as a food truck — parked downtown, feeding Tesla employees and Midtown lunch crowds — before Spencer found the right building and opened the brick-and-mortar in 2017. Third-generation Reno, his family's Shea's Tavern operates right next door.
The 1927 Building

The 1927 Building

Spencer gutted a century-old wreck and built something with real character: copper ceiling tiles, antique brass chandeliers, green velvet booths, and exposed brick. It earned a feature in This Is Reno in 2022 — the vibes are, in fact, right.
The Kitchen Today

The Kitchen Today

Organic eggs from Kool Kids Ranch, breads from Beloved's Bread, coffee from Blind Dog — local partners named because the sourcing matters. The menu runs from brick oven Neapolitan pizza to house-made vegan falafel, with brunch until 3pm and the kitchen firing until midnight.
